He is understood to have been shot at least once in the face, although local reports said he may have been shot twice and suffered injuries to his nose and an eye.

His condition late on Saturday night was critical.

He has not yet been named.

Spain is normally visited by millions of Britons every year, but the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions have significantly curbed the number of arrivals.

The Foreign Office is currently advising against all non-essential travel to Spain due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Travellers arriving from the UK are not required to self-isolate on arrival in Spain.

However, those arriving in the UK from Spain must quarantine for 14 days.
